hello...it's been awhile...

Something had to give... and it turned out to be my blog.  There was little time to be had once I became a 3 time grandmother... I have lived through losing both my parents, struggled to get my novel completed, created art illustrations for said novel, this and that and well... I always have time to post pictures, so Instagram became my social connection of choice.. pictures speak a thousand words...
But now I think I will try and post something a little catch up... to keep you all posted on the latest in my life...

I created some fashionable new art.wear inspired by everything around me. Every journey I take inspires the art I create.

My partner in crime Bill Mumy and I finally finished, re- worked, polished and decided it was time to let our novel ON PURPOSE out into the universe. 25 years in the making.... Set to be released in September.

I painted 23 illustrations for On Purpose and Bill composed a soundtrack for the book. There will be a deluxe version that has it all, and a Sights and Sounds book with my art and Bills music.  Keep a watchful eye on this page as it will all be available from here.

I became an action figure! Penny and the bloop are Lost In Space action figures. How fun is that... I sold out of the signed ones I had on my site and I'm trying to purchase more I can sign and send out. I will keep you posted.

I went to Salzburg again with my group of lovely folks and they experienced with me the behind the scenes locations and memories from when I made the movie, The Sound Of MusicI hope to do it again next year. Let me know if you are interested in joining us.  We always have a blast.

I will have some of my work on exhibit at this Family Of Artists show opening this weekend at the historic Art Directors Guild 800 Gallery. I was honored they used my image of my Dad's hands for their invite.

and... I decided to let my hair be its natural color; My Mom’s hair was pure white, and mine is pretty much the same. I am embracing my authenticity and loving the freedom it affords me.  I give a nod of my new head of hair to my Mum...who was by my side all the days of my youth...and is still by my side in my heart. I also lost my Dad this year and my heart was broken. It's the circle of life, he lived to be 95 and he had a great, fulfilled life, but it doesn't always make grieving easier for us left behind. I miss both of them everyday. But bit by bit I am putting my heart back together. Beauty, love, art and laughter helps. And smiling... lots of smiles.
till next time,
smile

It is with great pride that I announce my book

loving deeply...

once again life has gotten in the way and it has been quite a while since I have posted.  there have been some trying times lately...great loss...some sadness... but i would like to share this poignant passage to ponder...it is by Henri Nouwen “Love Deeply,” found in his book “The Inner Voice of Love.” I feel like it is worth reading...  loving deeply contains great pain... is it worth it?

Do not hesitate to love and to love deeply. You might be afraid of the pain that deep love can cause. When those you love deeply reject you, leave you, or die, your heart will be broken. But that should not hold you back from loving deeply. The pain that comes from deep love makes your love ever more fruitful. It is like a plow that breaks the ground to allow the seed to take root and grow into a strong plant. Every time you experience the pain of rejection, absence, or death, you are faced with a choice. You can become bitter and decide not to love again, or you can stand straight in your pain and let the soil on which you stand become richer and more able to give life to new seeds.

The more you have loved and have allowed yourself to suffer because of your love, the more you will be able to let your heart grow wider and deeper. When your love is truly giving and receiving, those whom you love will not leave your heart even when they depart from you. They will become part of yourself and thus gradually build a community within you.

Those you have deeply loved become part of you. The longer you live, there will always be more people to be loved by you and to become part of your inner community. The wider your inner community becomes, the more easily you will recognize your own brothers and sisters in the strangers around you. Those who are alive within you will recognize those who are alive around you. The wider the community of your heart, the wider the community around you. Thus the pain of rejection, absence, and death can become fruitful. Yes, as you love deeply the ground of your heart will be broken more and more, but you will rejoice in the abundance of the fruit it will bear.

lineage: a personal journey...

On May 31st, 2013 I told you about some art I was making called 'Lineage'. Well I am proud to say they did a lovely article on three of my pieces in the March/April issue of Somerset Studio Magazine which is on news stands the beginning of the month or available at Stampington & Company . (BTW have you checked out the Stampington store online lately...they have so many fantastic supplies and creative stuff...and they ship quickly too.)

The article describes how you can go on a personal journey and create your own lineage artwork.  Here's the three pieces that are in the article Lineage: A Personal & Private Journey, and a few pieces that were not that I wanted to share with all of you.
The first piece they showed was a square piece 24" x 24" I made for my husbands birthday of his family that was rooted in Indiana and Kentucky in the USA.
The second piece they highlighted was of my roots which began in Great Britain. I love the Union Jack and this lineage journey actually began because I wanted to have the Union Jack flag displayed somewhere in my home. What better way to display it than adorned with old family treasured photos on this 12 x 24 art piece.

The third piece was one I did for the Polamero/Tunzi family where I used the Greek flag as my background and the families personal photos, passport stamps, maps and ephemera.
I wanted to share with you a couple more of my Lineage altered art paintings that were not included in the article.

LINEAGE:  Henkle / Freedman
I thought I would point out a few of the special things in this piece. For the background I used the Flag of Wales, the James family crest, and a piece of the James tartan pattern all part of the family roots. These were intertwined with the photo booth picture of Rosemary Henkel that I hand painted, alongside her father’s passport picture. I scratched, distressed and painted with watercolor, acrylic and oil pastels portions of the photographs.

I made this piece in honor of my friend Connie’s mother who passed away when she was just 10 years old. A handwritten postcard from her mothers first trip she took without her children was a memory Connie definitely wanted to preserve. The beehive image was used to symbolize Utah, where her mother lived. A specific memory Connie has was that of her mother constantly crafting - crocheting, embroidering and stitching on the bus she rode home from work each day. I attached pieces of sewing tissue over some of the images as a symbol of her love of handcrafting.

LINEAGE: Brunengraver Sisters / Kessler/Hartz
For this piece the concentration was on the city of Queens in New York.  This is the place where Lena and Jacob German emigrated to from Germany in the 1800’s and resided in Ridgewood, New York  with their five daughters.  Lena Brunengraver owned the Pork Store on Forest Street and was an influential family in the state of New York... so a map of the city streets seemed a perfect background for the family’s treasured images of their Queens roots, home and business.

You can see the article in Somerset Studios Magazine on my website by clicking here...
I hope it inspires you to follow your own lineage and display some of those family images trapped in that shoe box.

Samhain - the root of Halloween

While the Irish harvest festival Samhain truly is the root of Halloween, it never was celebrated on October 31st.

The ancient Celtic year was divided by the four seasons and reckoned by a fluctuating lunar calendar. The full moon that rose midway between the Autumnal Equinox and Winter Solstice was called Samhain. It was the most scary and sacred time of all.

Winter was approaching, crops were dying, days were growing shorter, and the specter of death hung heavy in the air. Cattle were slaughtered and salted to feed the people through winter. Crops were gathered in and stored lest the shape-shifting Pooka, a nocturnal hobgoblin that delights in tormenting mortals, destroy the fruits of the field and bring on a season of famine. With storehouses full, the Celts marked the 3-day full moon period with revelry and ritual before facing the unknown.

Consumed with fear that they might be carted away to the land of the dead, the Irish lit huge bonfires lit to ward off evil forces. On Samhain the veil between this and the Otherworld was thin. The fairies roamed at will, the mounds marking the entries to their dwelling places glowed with eerie light, and many a mortal disappeared, lured to live forever below ground with the fairies.

It was Feile Na Marbh, Feast of the Dead. Children born that night were believed to be blessed with ‘double sight’, able to see and play with the fairies. Spirits appeared to ordinary folk advising them of future events. Long dead ancestors sought the warmth of a hearth fire and communion with the living. In every window, flickering candles lit the way for lost souls.

In 432AD Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, but the old ways persisted. Rome attempted to take the easy way out and absorbed the tradition into its own calendar. For centuries, the Church had honored its martyrs and saints on May 13, so in 844AD Pope Gregory IV transferred the saints’ feast to November 1, renaming it All Hallows Day.

Five hundred years later, Celtic descendants were still celebrating their 3-day full moon Feast of the Dead. In the 14th century, Rome decreed November 2 would be known as All Souls Day and masses would be said for the departed who had not yet been admitted to heaven. Hoping to finally eradicate the ancient festival, October 31 was titled All Hallows Eve and installed on the Church calendar as a vigil of preparation for the 2-day religious observance.

Christianity had absorbed Samhain, but the Celtic ceremony of honoring the dead – now artificially fixed on October 31st and November 1st and 2nd instead of the final harvest full moon – remained. It was still an occasion for feasting and revelry. It was still the night when souls roved free. And it was still the time to seek answers on things unknown.

Have a safe and happy Halloween.

out in the west Texas town of El Paso...

I had a great time at the Plaza Classic Film Festival in El Paso this last week...
After a quick trip to Tony Lama's Boots I donned my skirt, my new boots and was ready to go...
Watching The Sound of Music up on that big beautiful Plaza Theater movie screen was a thrill for many people.  (left) Chuck, (The creator of the film festival) his wife Ann and his lovely family.(right) In the Sound of Music spirit.

There was strudel and brown paper packages tied up with string... and suckers with my Brigitta face on them.
 that was a little weird...
I was glad to be able to fit in a visit to the El Paso Museum of Art. I could have spent hours there.
One of my favorite exhibits was the 30 pieces in the "Moving Pictures" Production Art from the Academy Library.

It was cool to see these sketches from "In Love And War", that was the first movie my sister Veronica ever made.

The "King and I" dining room sketch

Loved this one of illustrator Boris Leven's iconic drawing of Reata House for "Giant".
Very cool El Paso art...

Thanks El Paso for a great time...
